AFTER THE CARNIVAL
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

After the carnival I did wander
To the castle above the town
Smoke from the chimneys layered the night
In the darkness, touching my spirit
There was a presence all around
That in the day is blinded by sight
And as I felt the magic, scenes were in my mind
Of those celebrating the passing of time
Without hesitating to raise a glass and smile
From the heart to lift you up a mile

Down through the empty streets my steps took me
Where the procession passed before
And music rang in the silence
Sounds that carried me to the soulbeat
And left everybody wanting more
You could easily have been swept away to dance
At the gathering of instinct, you can realize your dream
For in the moment all is all it seems
When you are led by passion to find the ecstacy
Of expression, that moment you are free

Under the watching sky all this wonderwhile
There was a face so lucidly
Sharing the moment, sharing the thrill
You from my memory looking now at me
I remember our yesterday
It all passed in a heartbeat, it’s echoing still
And though I never made it to where you were waiting
I’m glad I see you where the truth can sing
And all the chords are ringing that we struck so deep inside
With all the good things that one should never hide

ANOTHER LIFE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Two children with bullets in their dreams
He longs to have a gun - She knows the blood and the screams
From two different places in the world
Something's happening but how much are we told

One life here, another life there
We ought to know, we ought to care

A deadly silence lurks amongst our brains
Take a look and see what's running down the drains
The tongues of people who have no voice
The blood of children who have no choice

One life here, another life there
We ought to know, we ought to care

It's a vicious circle so tell me who's involved
By closing your mind no problem can be solved
A family is grieving for the daughter they lost
A young man is waiting to enlist

One life here, another life there
And too few people know or care

One life here, another life there
We ought to know, we ought to care

CROSSING THE DISTANCE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

A never before seen sunset pours true gold upon a million waves
Wakening wind unbound by laws, it's a human soul that this beauty saves

And to me comes an image of your face showing the love burning in your heart
It could happen any time and place as with a masterful art

You can keep a memory for ever and a day
But you can't keep hold of somebody’s soul, it'll only slip away
Well there's a postcard waiting on your floor and the message on it says

I'm crossing the distance that I have to cross
There are things that I'm leaving behind but there's nothing that I've lost
I'm just crossing the distance

I'm seeing reflections that make everything real
All my worries turn into a smile in a light that heals

It's funny the things we hold behind where we keep them in
And a love for a person never dies, where do we begin?

'Cause it's sometimes hard to understand why people do the things they do
And I cried over the things you did but not like I cried for you
Now I can see the colour of my dreams and a deep ocean blue

I'm crossing the distance that I have to cross
There are things that I'm leaving behind but there's nothing that I've lost
I'm just crossing the distance
Crossing the distance
I'm crossing the distance

HOME THROUGH THE PARK
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

The rain is pouring from the urban night sky
So I just stopped in here for a while
It's a special place and it's dry

And it's never too long before your on my mind
You're here in the spirit at this place in time
And here's a story, here's a sign

I came here with a couple of friends
Back down the road a couple of bends
With a faith in the world that youthfulness lends

Oh this is where the people would make their way
To listen to the band on a hot summer's day
Well it's dark and it's wet now, but I'm ready to play

And your beauty sings in this feeling and sound
It fills this moment and the air all around
Sailing on a breeze brings me closer to you

When I've been out where the madness never ends
You've brought a youthful smile to my world again
Could we share in our dreams as our lives we spend?

I FIND IT AMAZING
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

I find it amazing those lips are for me
Whenever I need them you give them so free

I find it amazing what those eyes know
And the light I see in them makes me glow

It holds our lives together
The warmth of a smile
That is shared between us
That did me beguile
And it’s all so much more
Than I ever had before
It’s a reason to smile at tomorrow

I find it amazing the stars in the sky
Are shining for us up there so high

I find it amazing what’s happened to us
No need to question when you know that it’s love

IN THE SNOW
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

And the sun came over the hill
Bringing the valley a morning glory
The scene it looked upon
A waiting stage for an adventure story

And the boy sat up in bed
Realizing he was all a tingle
And he pulled the curtain wide
And the whole world had turned white

With snow
With snow

Soon he was making tracks
And his sledge behind
With a jam sandwich in his mittened hand
Off to the hillside

Every crystal brimmed with light
Cold and crisp and all heaven sent
He picked some up and took a bite
It was the pure taste of a magic moment

Then he pushed himself away
Like the first man on an important mission
Moving faster, holding tight
It was gravity that gave him flight

In the snow
In the snow

What a pleasure to behold
You’ve got to hold it while you can
He brushed himself down and got back on his feet
And went back up again

I USED TO PRETEND
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

And if I thought that the future was gonna change things
The last time I walked out of those gates
I understood that I’d been mistaken
The last time I dreamed I saw your face
And the world it keeps spinning round
Oh the years are rolling on
But the special feeling that you gave me
Sure as the sunrise it’s not gone

And I used to pretend
I used to pretend

A few years ago I saw you sitting there
But I turned you out of my gaze
I froze underneath it all
Going back to my old ways
When you’re lost in the search for an answer
Might put it all to the back of your mind
But when you were gone it all flooded back to me
Might have found n old friend if I’d took the time

And I used to pretend that I hadn’t seen you now
Don’t want to pretend again

The sun went by and I looked into your eye
Once more I was under your spell
And it was your smile that lit the evening sky
I heard a ringing bell
Time stood there and I hear my heart beating
I knew at last that I was free
And I took strength from the strength of my feeling
With the warmth of a tear as the light fell on me

And I used to pretend that I hadn’t seen you now
I used to pretend, but that’s a lonely thing to do now
Don’t want to pretend again

I'VE GOT A FEELING
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

I’ve got a feeling, I’ve got a feeling
I’ve got a feeling and it’s something new
Somehow it touches me, wakens inside of m
Finding it’s way through…

I’ve got a feeling, I’ve got a feeling
I can make a new start and try my best
New possibilities I’m revealing
I won’t follow the rest

Now I know that I can leave behind
All the fears that made me feel so blind
The light of truth makes the devil change his mind
Thank God for the light
The cool breeze against my body
There’s something I know so well it reminds me
And I’ve a tingle in my bones now it finds me
On this wonderful night

I’m in creations hands and it is in mine
As the lights twinkle I am music and rhyme

I’ve got a feeling, I’ve got a feeling
If we would break the chains from our heart
We’d see how love can bring us together
Why are we living worlds apart

I’ve got a feeling
I’ve got a feeling
I’ve got a feeling
I’ve got a feeling

JADE CITY
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Jade, Jade, Jady Jade
When the neon light starts to fade
You’ll be there still makin’ the grade
Still shinin’ through
We can depend on you

Jade, Jade, Jady Jade
Hope is balanced on a shinin’ blade
The bell has rung, the band has played
Won’t sing another song
I’ve gotta move along

I walked out into the city street
But the night it was not complete
Because I wanted something to eat
You were standing there

I stepped inside and I ordered a meal
And you gave a really good deal
How many hearts did you ever steal
behind the counter with your charm and flair

It’s the night time – penny to a pound
It’s the night time – when it all goes down
The way that some of ‘em behave in your place
How do you keep the smile on your face
People come to see that smile
Yes they do

Jade, Jade, Jady Jade
You know life is a big parade
And you are top of your trade
Don’t hand it over ‘till you get paid
It’s just the way you flash that blade

LOOKING IN THE FIRE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Looking in the fire, it's all in there
Thoughts and memories unfold, I can see your face
That longing for your embrace is burning in another place
Feeling warm, long after the storm that raged in me,
when we missed each other on the way
Living a lifetime in a day…

It all comes to me in the flames, so far from all the games
That loose us, bruise us and abuse us
Though we don't mean it bad
Anyway I'm not sad
Fire will touch the soul somehow and hope is burning now…

OUR LITTLE UNIVERSE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

We went back to your place
And talked in the kitchen again
You revealed your passion
And I hadn’t seen you as I saw you then
When you looked at me my special friend
I saw what I had missed then

Days found a rhythm
And proceeded through a reverie
Night times our closeness
Was held by each other as the street light gleamed
Through the cracks in the curtains onto our private scene
We left the madness behind

In a small part of the universe lies you and me
We see no walls, magic runs free
Glimpses of a world that is yet to be
Finding a trust and a truth in each others eyes

We ran life’s little errands
Through the tall Victorian streets
Where the red stone cathedral
Towered over the places that we used to meet
To a shady café we would retreat
From the bustle and the grind

I’m not a city creature
Let’s steal away let no one steal the day
You have a hope that I can’t seem to cope without
And I can’t quite believe it either

Here in our universe we cling so tight
My thoughts travel like a swallow in flight
Your message reaches me I see the light
Of a thousand dreams

PRECIOUS TIME
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Excuse me all you people, could I have a little of your time?
I’m what you might call a stranger, I’m looking for a sign
In my soul a fire is burning, is that really strange to you?
I am governed by a yearning, I’m only passing through

Ooooh just a little bit, a bit of your precious time
You and I are part of it, it is a precious time

It seems like there’s a puzzle which creases up your brow
Yet the answer lives in silence, it’s speaking to you no
On the face of it it’s impossible but change is in the air
As far away as your next breath when you start looking there

Ooooh just a little bit, a bit of your precious time
You and I are part of it, it is a precious time

What do we share in this our time, other than this theatre stage?
When if we pulled together we might turn a better page
Maybe you have thought about it, maybe hard and long
How do we show that there’s a family to which we all belong?

Ooooh just a little bit a bit of your precious time
We can help each other realize it is a precious time

Ooooh just a little bit, a bit of your precious time
You and I are part of it, it is a precious time

SOMETHING CALLING
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Something was calling me
Something boundless and free
As I gazed into the river’s flow
Longing it to take me away..
.
For the darkness that I made my own
Filled my heart with a weight of stone
But I knew that there must be more
And I was looking to find the door

For time and spirit flowing are longing and knowing
Of the deceit we try to hide, and the loneliness inside
But you can leave the darkness with a will
And the one who gave us life so wonderful
When you’re finding your way home again
His door is always open

Why don’t we cast ourselves on the open sea
We may learn to give joyfully, see the beauty that can be
And why don’t we do what the good inside us really wants us to
Breath with me and I’ll breath with you on our roads into destiny

Something is calling me
Something boundless and free
And as I see the river flowing
I know where I’m going…

STEAL AWAY
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

What’s this feeling I can’t describe
We’re knowing and we’re showing we’re living and we’re loving life
It’s so simple but then it happens to me
And the moment it happens is the moment you see and then you

Steal away it’s a little riddle
Steal away it gets me in the middle
Steal away it kills me a little when you when you when you…
Steal away

What language do we really speak
Sometimes the words that fall out of my mouth make me seem like a freak
‘Cause you find that you’ve got nothing to say
But it says it all when you just

Steal away it’s a little riddle
Steal away it gets me in the middle
Steal away it kills me a little when you when you when you…
Steal away

Between two people and a bottle of wine
Between two planets and two points in time
That moment just upped and went
But I’m still here and I’m wondering just what it meant

Steal away it’s a little riddle
Steal away it gets me in the middle
Steal away it kills me a little when you when you when you…
Steal away
Steal away

Steal away (4 times)

THE HAWTHORN TREE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

They stood beside the hawthorn tree
At the chapel by the hill
Swore to be forever true
And there they are standing still

They were in my gaze in the autumn haze
It had been so long since I passed that way
And I thought upon, that precious bond
And the love that I feel today

We climbed the hill and bless our eyes
To see the beauty all around
The gentle valley and moorland high
Whose music is the perfect sound

And whose shapes I see in my memory
Looking over us in the special times
Days long gone spent with the ones
Whose hearts were filling mine

And it’s only the love that will make us whole
A knock on the door for old time’s sake
And for the sake of something new
Received with smiles and tenderness

And we shared some stories too
And when we had to go I then did know
These moments could never be
But for secrets there whispered in the air

Down by the hawthorn tree

THE WARM SEA
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

Come swimming in the warm sea
Up and down on the waves with me
All is one
Under the sun
I never felt so free

Feel the breeze on your bare skin
As the water draws you in
Take the heat
Off your feet
Slowly walk on in

Into the blue inviting
There’s no point in fighting
When you do what it’s telling you
You know that it’s true

It’s so fresh it’s so clear
It hasn’t yet paid the price so dear
The seagull gives a happy cry
As he comes gliding by

Be part of the motion
Of the wide rolling ocean
Know that time
is yours and mine
It’s a magic potion

Break through to the other side
Where the breakers crash and slide
Don’t be lost
In the future and past
Don’t take it all so fast

It’s not too late, it’s not too soon
Returning to nature’s womb
Learn again that she knows how to give
Live and let live

Yes I feel elation
It’s a celebration
The waves washing at the sandy shore
Never ask what for

THERE WAS A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

I was missing you in this rainy town
I felt like turning everything around
I had to sing again here and it wasn’t too grand
When I heard about the man and his band
I’d go and see them after singing my set
Anything could happen yet

After two hours I quickly departed
Nobody was broken hearted
But I knew that I was in for a treat
As I sped on down to Bourbon Street
Upstairs into the crowded place
There was radiance on every face

I could see why
There was a twinkle in his eye

By impulse the music jagged here and there
And those men’s fingers were everywhere
The heart-beat of the drumming did really ignite
The smoking chords in the smoky light
While some of the people were looking at the players
Like they could answer all their prayers

He let us see the wood, not just the trees
I was shaking off the melancholy disease
It wasn’t just for him, he didn’t lay it on thick
He got to the things that make people tick
And a vibrancy which felt so right
Was with so many of us that night

As he said goodbye
With a twinkle in his eye

The people shouted and stamped on the floor
‘Till he came back to play some more
But the mood changed as he played so hauntingly
Did you call my name his voice echoed out
And I shuddered as my soul cried out
Would you be calling out for me…

In the morning I woke to a new sensation
I was being tickled by inspiration
I had to set that feeling free
I went for a walk down by the sea
It fell on me like a golden ray
A hopeful heart can go a long way

It’s not a day gone by
And it puts a twinkle in my eye

VITAL SPARK
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

The rainbow fell across the sky
Gave an answer to the question why
And the river flowed along
The first time I saw your brave face
And I believe we could have met in space
And still wound up singing songs

We picked the vine through sun and showers
Drank the wine ‘till early hours
With a thousand things to say
For I had come from a place so dark
And you gave life that vital spark
In your very special way

And it was a change for me
Knowing that somebody could see
Worth in all of my endeavour
I had a jewel I would treasure every moment of…

We sang our song in far off places
Cast over a stream of faces
Let poetry unwind

From the mountain to the salty sea
Our purpose was just to be free
And to see what we could find

We were a team that could communicate
It seemed to me we’d found our fate
Time is the pulse of a dancing reel
Times we had no one can steal away from us

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT GIRL
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

What was is it about that girl made people wonder
‘What is it about that girl?’
She was a friend of mine and I was
Thinking about it most of the time

What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl

Sometimes it’s best not to ask why
But to treasure the feeling that’s inside
But I couldn’t help myself
I just kept turning it over in my mind

What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl

Maybe it was her sense of dare
Made me forget everything and drew me to her
Still there was something that wouldn’t let me be
Something that I couldn’t see

I will make a song and dance
But I’m not talking about any big romance
And it might be a selfish thing
I didn’t want to spend my whole time wondering

La la la li li li li

What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl
What is it about that girl

WINTER SKIES
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

The frost had fallen on the rolling country,
we were driving home from a friend we'd seen
In through the window December's cold air
was freshening our faces and our thoughts in there

We stopped down by the river for the last of the day,
my brother went walking and I did stay
A far away feeling had left me behind,
I was trying to make sense of it in my mind

I turned the button to hear the sound,
the politicians were passing the buck around
But who passed it to them and where does it end?
Do we ever put our feet on solid ground?

I put in the plastic that I had brought
and Buffy sang to me straight from the heart
The terrible story of her native land
she was calling on me to understand

There's a voice to be heeded, a strength to be felt
There's a mould to be broken, a hardness to melt
There's a cause to be stood for, a heart to be known
There's a chance to be given for love to grow…

He came back and we travelled on,
we were talking 'bout the world and what's going wrong
In the final splendour of winter's first day
we saw the sun going down on man's wasteful way

Then the pale, shimmering colours of the light
were keeping the flame of beauty in sight
A reminder of heaven, before the dark night,
it won't be too long before reality bites

There's a voice to be heeded, a strength to be felt
There's a mould to be broken, a hardness to melt
There's a cause to be stood for, a heart to be known
There's a chance to be given for love to grow…

YOUR EYES WERE ASKING
(words + music – Jon Brindley)

The last time that I saw your face your eyes were asking
Why leave me now and cause such pain
If you stay we could be happy

I started my car, I drove far beyond the horizon
There was no because, not for words
Only sounds of sadness

...wait and there is change as the seasons change
Following a light we might not always see
A power that dictates the hour
Of our sorrow, of our joy…

Through tears I looked in the air, still saw you there, your eyes were asking
How can you be so very hard
You can see my love's for the taking

And all that I did know was I love you so and that I was leaving you
After all this time and I felt so blind
But had to find what I was needing

It's not a fairground ride, we must all decide
If we are to let God's love work through us
And live the best that we can live
Making the most of the gifts given to us…

…your eyes were asking
